Good writers are hard to come by. Good communicators
who understand people, see the big picture and think
strategically are even harder to find.
After over a decade in the communications field,
Karen Allen founded
The Written Edge to blend her passions
for writing, creativity and customer service. Her
dream was to help forward-thinking organizations improve
the quality of people’s lives, by helping those
organizations communicate and promote vital information,
products and services.

How We Began…
Growing up in rural New Brunswick, there wasn’t
a great deal of excitement for a young girl outside
of climbing trees, swimming in the ocean and picking
blueberries. So Karen spent much of her free time
reading and writing poems and stories in her journal.
A dedicated student, she tortured her teachers by
handing in essays that were twice the required length.
That early interest in words translated into a Bachelor
of Arts in languages (French and Spanish) and a Master
of Journalism. After university, Karen worked as a
technical writer and website editor for Nortel Networks,
a website project manager for Imatics Inc., a senior
communications advisor and corporate communications
manager for Justice Canada, and manager of internal
communications for Industry Canada.
Throughout her career, Karen noticed a distinct need
for top-quality communicators who could combine writing,
editing, leadership, strategic thinking and creativity.
So she set out to launch her own business, and The
Written Edge became reality.
The Written Edge is a privately-held
sole proprietorship founded on Karen’s skills
and knowledge. Karen works with freelance associates
to provide back-up for her services and combine expertise
for larger projects. See Our
People for more information.
