Karen Allen is a senior communications
consultant and founder of The Written Edge.
She holds a Master of Journalism from Carleton University
and has won numerous work and academic awards
for her writing, project management and leadership.
Karen is a seasoned communications professional with
over fifteen years experience as a writer, editor,
strategic communications advisor and manager in the
private and public sectors. She has worked for technology
companies like Nortel Networks and Imatics Inc. as
well as government departments like Health Canada,
Justice Canada and Industry Canada. Her journalism
training and professional experience allow her to
easily explain complex subjects to employees and the
public using clear, simple language that is both interesting
and easy to understand.
Karen is passionate about helping people improve
the quality of their lives, and enjoys providing writing
and communications services to forward-thinking businesses
and public sector organizations. She is well known
for her ability to see the big picture, provide creative
strategic advice to senior executives, manage complex
projects and motivate people.
Karen’s specialties include writing for the
Web, employee communications, small business marketing
and plain language writing. Personal topics of interest
include health, fitness, personal finance, business,
parenting and the mind-body-spirit connection.
Outside work, Karen enjoys spending time with her
two children, hiking, gardening, running, practicing
yoga, playing guitar and piano, and photographing
kids and landscapes.
Karen is fluently bilingual and has Secret government
security clearance. She is a member of Toastmasters
and the Ottawa Independent Writers Association.
